ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE
Actively Exploring the Peninsula
11 & 12 Day Itineraries
Ushuaia to Ushuaia

When you set foot on the White Continent, you want to benefit from the collective expertise of veterans who know the region inside out. That's the essence of our Antarctic Adventure. Sailing through iceberg-filled bays beneath snowcapped peaks; spotting seals and whales among the ice floes; exploring vast penguin rookeries and remote research stations - it all adds up to the perfect introduction to Antarctica for a small group of active adventurers. Further adventures are available on select expeditions.
ITINERARY

Day 1-2: One world ends. Another begins
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, sits at the foot of the Andes, in a beautiful setting. Relax at a sidewalk café and soak up the "end of the world" feeling of this frontier town. After spending a night at our host hotel, tour the nearby National Park. Board the ship after a traditional Argentine asadobarbecue lunch.

Day 3-4: The Drake Passage
Among the many unforgettable experiences you'll have on your journey, food will certainly be one of them. It may seem as if you are dining in one of the finer restaurants in the world, with one exception: other restaurants would never interrupt you with shouts of "whales ahead at 12 o'clock."

You'll be properly prepared for wildlife sightings, because our Expedition Team delivers an incomparable education program as you cross the Drake Passage en route to Antarctica.

Day 5-8: Land, birds, seals, whales, volcanoes, ahoy
You have arrived in Antarctica! The Expedition Team will attempt an average of two landings per day. Many factors influence the daily program, such as prevailing wind, ice, weather conditions, and wildlife behavior. During the voyage, our onboard fleet of Zodiacs will transfer you to penguin rookeries, where you are welcomed by a committee of chattering birds. There will be leisurely Zodiac sightseeing cruises past icebergs or wildlife on the rocky shoreline.

Discovering The White Continent
During your four days exploring the Peninsula, you'll make new friends over a game of cards in the lounge, or a beverage in the bar. Don your parka and join fellow travelers on the deck as you sail through the Gerlache Strait or along the Danco Coast, past towering glacier-covered mountains that shoot to the sky. Don't forget to pack your binoculars. There may be seals sunning on an ice floe or a raft of penguins feeding as you sail past.

History, wildlife, scenery - Antarctica has it all.
During the in-depth education program, the historian will recount the development of the region, pointing out the remains of buildings where spies dwelled or a doctor went mad. The ornithologist will take you ashore and help you identify different species of birds. You could cruise with a glaciologist through a bay filled with fantastically colored icebergs.

Day 9-11: A reluctant farewell
Returning to Ushuaia across the Drake Passage, you know you are one of the people in the world that have set foot on Antarctica. The adventure will be with you forever. You may already be thinking of a return trip - as many have found before, the lure of Antarctica is a strong one.

Please note: We also offer a 12-day itinerary on some departures.

*Airfare is not included in the program. Some group flights are available on request.

Please note: Read this itinerary as a guide only; our exact route and program varies according to ice and weather conditions - and the wildlife we encounter. Flexibility is the key to the success of this expedition. Visits to research stations depend on final permission.

The expedition ships have all been designed and built for polar exploration and are ideally suited to expedition cruising. Their officers and crew are Russian - all highly experienced in ice navigation - and they are joined by our knowledgeable expedition staff and lecturers from all over the world. The adventure fleet voyages focus on a region of Antarctica that is rarely ice-bound during the southern summer. They visit the South Shetland Islands, the northern and western coasts of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Their ice-strengthened hulls, as well as their sophisticated communications and satellite equipment, make them extremely safe modes of transport in this remote corner of the world. The atmosphere on board all three vessels is relaxed and informal. We provide a good choice of superb food from around the world, and comfortable dining facilities, but do not believe in wasting valuable exploration time in formalities such as dressing for dinner. Our aim is to include as much time ashore, and as many Zodiac cruises, as the weather will allow. With this in mind, we have chosen vessels that enable us to keep passenger numbers small enough for everyone to be out and about enjoying the wildlife and scenery at the same time. This means that we can provide much more time ashore, or in Zodiacs, than many other vessels operating in this region. We do not normally provide traditional entertainment - in the form of singers and dancers - on board. While cruising, the entertainment provided is an ever-changing and breathtaking landscape of icy waterways, glaciers, icebergs and rugged, snow-capped mountains, plenty of bird and whale watching, and a packed program of illustrated lectures by knowledgeable and entertaining experts in everything from whales and albatrosses to geology and polar exploration. The end result is more like a private expedition than a traditional cruise.

Explorers' Route:
Itinerary

Day 1
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

Getting to the southernmost city in the world is easy, because the local airport (USH) is served by flights from Buenos Aires, and Santiago, Chile. Don't worry about where you'll stay when you arrive: we've included a night at one of the city's charming hotels.

Day 2
Embarkation Day

Before we transfer you to the ship, you may join the included guided motor coach tour of Tierra del Fuego National Park. We'll make a stop for lunch - a traditional Argentine asado barbecue, which is lamb, chicken and beef grilled over an open fire, and served with chimichuri, Argentina's regional salsa.

Day 3
At Sea

Take advantage of a day at sea to become familiar with the ship and members of the Expedition Team. While sailing, our team of specialists will lead a series of presentations that prepare you for shore landings to come.

Day 4-5
Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

Two highlights of your exploration of the archipelago will be the warm welcome you receive from the residents and the extraordinary diversity of wildlife. You'll visit Stanley the only city on the islands and the last major urban centre you'll explore on this expedition.

Day 6-7
At Sea

As the ship draws nearer to Antarctica, a sharp drop in water and air temperature may indicate that you have crossed the Antarctic Convergence. This invisible circumpolar, undulating line separates Antarctica from the rest of the globe.

Day 8-11
South Georgia

Renowned as a destination for birders, South Georgia is a breeding ground for many species, such as Wandering Albatross, Southern Giant Petrels, and five penguin species. At a meter tall (3 ft) King Penguins that breed in the thousands on the island are the second tallest penguin.

South Georgia has many connections to the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. Ernest Shackleton is buried in the churchyard at Grytviken. One of the glaciers that cover the island is named after Otto Nordenskjold the leader of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition which called at the island in 1902-03. Our polar historian will bring the past to life ashore and aboard

Day 12-13
At Sea

En route to the Peninsula we'll keep you busy identifying seabirds, listening to engaging presentations on everything from the Antarctic food web to the life cycle of the humpback whale. On selected departures, try your hand at painting or photography, under the guidance of our artist-in-residence.

Day 14-17
The Antarctic Peninsula

Shore landings are announced in advance in the daily program delivered to your cabin each evening. To plan the daily activities the Expedition Team takes advantage of the long hours of daylight that occur so near to the Antarctic Circle.

An exploration of the Peninsula may include visits to penguin rookeries, research stations and encounters with marine mammals and iceberg graveyards. Although each voyage is painstakingly planned, it is impossible to provide prior to departure a definitive summary of the journey you will actually experience. The Expedition Leader in cooperation with the ship's Captain adjusts the route as the expedition unfolds to take advantage of the best weather and ice conditions. For this reason, no itinerary is the same.

Day 18-19
The Drake Passage

The notorious Drake Passage can be relatively calm, under the right weather conditions. Have seasickness medicine on hand just in case the Drake lives up to its reputation.

Day 20
Disembarkation, Ushuaia, Argentina

After breakfast aboard the ship, we'll transfer you by bus to the passenger collection point at the end of the quay.

ABOUT THE ORLOVA

Expedition Rates
All rates per person in US dollars. If you're traveling alone, ask us about the significant savings you can realize from our Request-Share Program, which matches solo travelers in the same cabin.

Start /Finish Locations
Ushuaia, Argentina/Ushuaia, Argentina

Expedition Rates Include
  • Hotel accommodation, with continental breakfast, the night prior to embarkation
  • Zodiac transfers and sightseeing while aboard
  • Education program
  • Group transfer between hotel and vessel for embarkation
  • Group transfer between vessel and airport following disembarkation
  • Tierra del Fuego National Park Tour and BBQ lunch

Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend that travelers to the Polar Regions are covered by travel insurance that will reimburse them for emergency medical services and evacuation. While our ships offer a clinic staffed by a licensed doctor, serious medical emergencies would require evacuation, which is extremely expensive, because our voyages travel to remote locations far from medical care facilities.

Passport
Travelers to Antarctica must carry a passport that is valid for 6 months beyond the return date of the voyage. The passport should have sufficient blank pages available for exit and entry stamps.

Visas
To reach Antarctica our ships depart from ports in Argentina. Travelers should check with local consulates for these countries to determine whether they will need an entry visa.
