Oceanographic
Ice-Class Research Vessel
Akademik Shokalskjy

The 233 foot, 2,142-ton Akademik Shokalskiy was built in Finland during the 1980's for the former Soviet Union's program of polar and oceanographic research. Refurbished in 1997, the vessel is ideally suited for expedition cruising, carrying a maximum of just 49 passengers in comfortable outside cabins, each with a desk and ample storage space.

Cabins on Deck 3 have portholes, two lower berths and a wash basin. Ample public bathrooms are located in the passage way. Cabins on Deck 4 and 5 have windows, upper and lower berths (except 404, 406 & 408 which have two lower berths) and private facilities. There are also two larger Superior cabins and one spacious Suite on Deck 5, both with windows, lower berths and private facilities. The Suite has windows facing forward and also to the port side.

Public areas include a lounge and bar, small library, infirmary (there is a doctor on board), and a sauna. Hearty meals prepared by a European chef are served in two dining rooms which also serve as a lecture and video room. Views are excellent from the large, open decks and the navigation bridge, where you are always welcome. The ship is equipped with sophisticated navigational and radio communications facilities, and has an ice rating equivalent to Lloyd's 100 1A - the highest possible for passenger ships). Among other equipment is a passive stabilisation system for added comfort if rough weather is encountered at sea.

Professor Multanovskiy's friendly Russian officers and crew are very experienced in Antarctic waters, and dedicated to exploring remote areas of the world. We also have an outstanding team of expedition staff and expert lecturers who are always available to share their knowledge of the area and its natural history, and to guide you on shore excursions. The ship has three rugged and versatile Zodiac landing craft, used for going ashore at remote beaches as well as making cruises among icebergs, along coastlines and among the sea ice.

The atmosphere aboard is relaxed and informal, more like a private expedition than a cruise. To explore such a region with just a small number of fellow passengers is a real luxury, and will help make your Antarctic voyage of discovery and adventure a truly unforgettable experience.
