Route of the Emperor penguin Expedition
After the resounding success of this year’s Emperor penguin expeditions… berths are filling fast for these new safaris!
The world’s largest penguin, the majestic Emperor of Antarctica, raises its young on the hard Antarctic sea-ice huddled together against the biting winter winds. In a display of paternal instinct, uncommon in the animal world, this meticulous and arduous task is performed by the Emperor males alone while the females stock up on food for a springtime return.
Emperor Penguins: Snow Hill Island Safari
Three Departures
Start: Ushuaia
Finish: Ushuaia, Argentina or Stanley, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
When booking your flights, please note that all expeditions begin in Ushuaia and disembark in Ushuaia, with the exception of the November 18-December 1, 2007 voyage which disembarks in Stanley, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). Flying to Ushuaia entails a connection either through Buenos Aires or Santiago, Chile, whereas flights from Mount Pleasant Airport, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) connect through Stanley only.
We've reserved a block of seats on a flight from Stanley to Santiago on disembarkation day.
Before we transfer you to the ship, you may join the included guided motor coach tour of Tierra del Fuego National Park. We'll make a stop for lunch - a traditional Argentine asado barbecue, which is lamb, chicken and beef grilled over an open fire, and served with chimichurri, Argentina's regional salsa.
Crossing the Drake Passage is as much a part of the Antarctic experience as penguins and krill. With the right weather conditions the transit will be relatively easy, but pack your seasickness medicine just in case the Drake lives up to its reputation.
In anticipation of the first landing at the rookery while sailing you learn how to enter and exit Zodiacs and helicopters. The addition of helicopters for ice reconnaissance, aerial sightsseing and shore transfers is one reason that an icebeaker expedition delivers the ultimate Antarctic experience.
Adventurers returning from our 2006 safaris raved about the expedition, observing that the environment was as fascinating as the birds. The Emperors raised their young on sea ice that had captured icebergs, freezing them in place like huge sculptures dropped at random into the landscape. It is our intention during the 2007 expeditions to spend 3 or 4 days in the vicinity of the rookery. Our itinerary may have to be modified in response to changing weather and ice conditions in the Weddell Sea.
If the visit to the rookery occurs as planned we intend to spend a few days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. The Expedition Team will be planning visits to the rookeries of Gentoo or Adelie Penguins, where courtship behavior will be underway. The contrast will be startling after your experience at the Snow Hill rookery.
A day at sea can be as busy as any day ashore. The day speeds by when you bird watch from the deck, attend presentations, or just idly watch the waves from the fly deck. The 360 view from the top of the ship is perfect for taking panoramic photos.
After breakfast aboard, you will be transferred in a group to either the passenger collection point in Ushuaia, or the airport near Stanley.
All prices are per person.

Some additional helpful information:
If I book this expedition, what additional major expenses will I incur?
1. All Quark Expeditions passengers are required to obtain and verify travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation. Please note that in many instances medical evacuation insurance can be obtained separately from trip cancellation coverage.
2. Transportation to and from the embarkation point is not included in the cost of the expedition.
3. Wearing the right clothes is essential. Conditions can swiftly shift to storms with very cold winds and snow flurries. A parka, gloves, boots, hat and scarf are essential. We provide a complimentary parka and loan travelers a pair of boots. On these early voyages, however, additional gear may be required. Once you have booked, we will provide you with a complete list of what to pack.
4. Due to the infrequent air service from Stanley, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), we recommend that travelers on the last voyage purchase our optional travel and accommodation package.
What is the average age and nationalities of travelers on this expedition?
Icebreaker Adventurers range in age from 50 to 85 - with the majority between 60 and 75. Our expedition members are independent-minded travelers from around the world with a strong interest in exploring remote regions.
Must I understand English to participate?
Our voyages appeal to an international audience. About 40% of the travelers who join our voyages come from countries where English is not the first language. English is the language used for all documents, communications, shipboard announcements and education program presentations. While most of our travelers have a working knowledge of English, their level of proficiency with the language varies greatly. If you have questions on how your knowledge of English may impact your experience, please contact our office and one of our Sales Representatives will be happy to discuss this with you.
Do I have to be fit to join one of these expeditions?
Unassisted mobility is requirement of this expedition. Helicopters, which are a vital component of this expedition, land some distance from the rookery to avoid disturbing the birds. You will have to walk as much as 1.6 km (1 mile) to and from the helicopter landing site over rough, sea ice. You must, also, be able to make your way down a steep, narrow gangway on the side of the ship to board Zodiacs and for sea ice exploration.
